OUT OF SIGHT, OUT OF MIND

Demand accountability from attorneys for children in CA foster care who fail the very people they are paid to represent and protect.

MOST ATTORNEYS IN CALIFORNIA FAIL THE CHILDREN WHO DEPEND ON THEM TO ADVOCATE FOR THEIR PROTECTION, SAFETY AND WELL-BEING

Every day in California, children in the foster care system are represented by court-appointed attorneys in proceedings where judges make critical decisions about their placement, safety, families, and future. A first-of-its-kind investigative report by Advokids, Western Center on Law and Poverty, and Akin reveals that two-thirds of children in California foster care have never met with their attorney.

Key findings from more than 1,000 caregivers and former foster youth surveyed include:

43%

reported that the appointed attorney never provided their name and contact information.

65%

reported that the appointed attorney never met with their child/youth client.

80%

of survey respondents in Butte, Fresno, Kern, Riverside, and Stanislaus counties reported that appointed attorneys never met with the children in their care.

"We have a system that protects itself, not the kids in foster care."

JOIN US TO DEMAND THAT THE RIGHTS OF CHILDREN IN CALIFORNIA FOSTER CARE ARE PROTECTED

Urge the CA State Legislature to pass AB 3049 to ensure that child clients are well-represented by their attorneys.

"It’s hard to meet the full needs of children caught in the child welfare system if we're not ensuring those children have routine and regular contact with their court-appointed representatives. Right now, too many children are going unseen and unheard. AB 3049 will close this gap and ensure every child is seen, heard and represented fully."
